Stocks firm after rebound, jobs data on tap
Overnight
US stocks bounced Wednesday, with the S&P 500 up 0.5% to 7,666.60, the Dow up 0.6% to 53,061.95, and the Nasdaq up 0.5% to 26,217.83, helped by Nvidia rallying more than 3%. Asia mostly rose overnight, with Tokyo's Nikkei 225 up 0.2% to 64,455.83 and Seoul's Kospi up 1.4% to 6,656.81, while European markets opened mixed with London's FTSE 100 flat and Germany's DAX up 0.3%. US stock futures are pointing to a modest opening gain, with S&P 500 futures up about 0.1% and Dow futures up 0.2%.
What to watch
Weekly initial jobless claims, out at 8:30am Eastern, will show how many people filed for unemployment benefits last week, and economists are looking for around 205,000, so a bigger number would raise fresh worries the labor market is cooling. The ISM services index at 10am covers activity in the services side of the economy, which is a bigger employer than manufacturing, and a soft reading would reinforce the same concern. Earnings from Lululemon, DocuSign, Campbell's, and Ciena land around the close.
